Mash-ups have gained a lot of credibility between the fall of Danger Mouse’s infamous Grey Album and the rise of Girl Talk’s overwhelming mega-mixes. There’s just something marvelous about hearing seemingly mismatched ideas work together, as two worlds collide to a heavy beat.

Rather than highlighting music’s differences, Kids & Explosions’ Josh Raskin mixes songs together based on their surprising common ground, making them blend rhythmically and melodically. In “Use Your Words,” Raskin takes apart the somber piano chords of Emily Haines’ “The Maid Needs a Maid.” He even touches her vocals up to have her mouth the words, “I love you” and “You are made for me” — sentiments far outside her song’s original message.

More surprising is the harmonious entrance of an Ol’ Dirty Bastard vocal off the hit song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.” Raskin even peppers the background with acoustic guitars from Beck’s Sea Change, and it all fits. Who knew? A few Lauryn Hill verses hit the mix to top things off, but they’re relentlessly split into spare words and consonants. With nothing unchanged or unedited, “Use Your Words” finds the true meaning of collage.

Twenty-year-old Simon Ho grew up in a musical household. Dad used to build guitars, his sister was an R&B fanatic, and Ho himself played drums in the school marching band. That love of percussion led his father to buy him a copy of Reason 2.5—which Ho still uses to make tunes—and when combined with his discovery of juke a few years back, Cedaa’s production style was born. Both his “Tiffany” b/w “Simba” single on Car Crash Set and Old Growth EP on Dave Quam’s Free Bass offer a melodic, synth-infused take on Windy City sounds.

Lost Lander is a project founded by songwriter/forester Matt Sheehy when he began work on a new album with producer Brent Knopf. The two often worked remotely – using the internet to communicate ideas – and from time to time they met at majestic spots on the Oregon coast to work in closer proximity.

SANOMA
Nathaniel Beede, Cory DeMent, Dana Little, and Ben Vos have combined their sundry and substantial music experience to create a brand of Americana music influenced by surf and shoegaze artists, spaghetti western films, seminary studies, and an untiring commitment to make meaningful music. Sanoma’s narrative lyrics are set against a steady backdrop of an iridescent telecaster with tremolo, refined drumming on a Rogers kit, vintage keyboard instruments and an upright bass. The songs, both haunting and hopeful, are often crafted around themes of desertion, love, redemption, and returning home.

Musical anthropologists interested in the study of just how fast a band can evolve need look no further than the six upright, upstanding men in Oregon’s Larry and His Flask. Formed by brothers Jamin and Jesse Marshall in 2003, the Flask (as the band’s expanding army of fans calls them) spent its first half-decade stuck in a primordial, punk-rock goop, where a blood-sweat-and-beers live show took priority over things like notes and melodies. Don’t misunderstand: The band was (somewhat) skilled and an absolute joy to watch, but the goal was always the party over perfection.

This Bellingham, Washington trio first comes across like a classic organ-drums-guitar soul jazz combo but the plethora of nifty touches and sweet complications quickly affirmed them as a cut above the pack. As one wild-legged onlooker barked, “Crush grooves, man. They are killing it.” They ranged from an instrumental answer to vintage Philly soul to more fiery spaces, but often dipping into the blues underpinning their funk. Executed with precision and full of well placed pauses and general centrifugal force, you might call it an extraordinarily fine soundtrack to a good porno.
