Summer in the San Juan Islands

This duo of genre-bender pride has made a name for itself on the Bay Area scene by successfully mixing spiritualism and hip-hop. Oakland’s MC Zion and DJ/producer Amp Live blen…d hip-hop and trip-hop beats with lyrics focused on a message of unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. After a couple of indie hits, the duo slowly made inroads while opening for rap royalty like De La Soul, Rakim, and Run-D.M.C. Their debut album, Mind Over Matter, was released in May of 2000 and features collaborations with fellow Bay Area rappers Rasco, Planet Asia, and the Grouch. Although Zion I operates out of Berkeley, the group was originally formed in Atlanta, making their music difficult to classify as strictly West Coast hip-hop. Their musical style makes them even harder to define. With a style that borrows from hip-hop, trance, drum’n'bass, and reggae, Zion I’s style is equally mystical and mystifying

Amp Live is building a rep as one of cali’s most talented and diverse music producer/djs. After his dreamy soulful beats for the hip hop group Zion I, he has been able to produce for major and independent artist such as Akon(Warner), Flipsyde(Interscope Records), Nicole Schercenger of the Pussy Cat Dolls(Interscope), Tokyo Police Club, MGMT, Linkin Park , Goapele, and Mystic. Most importantly Amplive’s most recent success has been his critcally acclaimed “Rainydayz Remixes” album for the rock group Radiohead’s In Rainbows LP. Always experimenting, Amplive has also done rock, dance, electro, mashups, and drum ‘n bass.

In the past years, Amp Live has been a part of the video game industry, having his production being one of the main features for the Sony Traxxpad and also a basketball player character in the NBA 2K6 to the newly released 2K10 video game. Finally, Amp’s beats have been featured on a number of movies, tv shows, and commercials, which include Nestle’s “Wonka Candy-Feed Your Imagination” series, “So You Think You Can Dance”, “Dirt” by Courtney Cox, “Friday Night Lights”, “Honey”, “Big Fat Liar”,”Leperchaun 4″, “Americas Top Model” by Tyra Banks, ESPN Sports center, and the “Jamie Kennedy Show”.

hella dope–a term I should never use again. The local hip-hop duo has been making some noise around the scene (though, admittedly, I’m late to the party) with their interstellar soundscapes and playful lyrics. Listening to Seattle natives Tay Sean, 21, and Jerm, 28, put me in mind of Outkast, Cee-Lo, Lil Wayne, and several other MCs unafraid of skirting the stratosphere with their weirdness. And, yes, that’s a good thing.

During a phone chat earlier this afternoon, Tay, who does all of the duo’s production, described Helladope’s style as “that space-age funk” and/or “neo-soul funk-jazz hip-hop.” He went on to cite J. Dilla, Organized Noize, and Platinum Pied Pipers as influences. You can hear their influence, to varying degrees, on “Thee Trip” below, along with a member from THEESatisfaction (a female duo/couple who live with Tay) delivering another interpretation of the strange brew Helladope has concocted: “Pyschedelic space-rap jazz for that ass/Sci-fi hyphy twilight zone razzmatazz.”

Breaking down beats seems as natural to HEAD LIKE A KITE’s Dave Einmo as breaking down genre barriers. On HLAK’s new May 10, 2010 full-length, Dreams Suspend Night, blip beats dance around meaty analog synths and mischievous guitars, while HLAK drops the vocal hook bombs. Guests like Boom Bip (Neon Neon), Her Space Holiday, Asya of Smoosh, and members of The Long Winters, Saturday Knights, and Swervedriver fuel the party. And what a party it is.

Bombastic drums and live instruments glitched and deconstructed around swirling pop melodies culminate into the soundtrack to an all-nighter. Prepare the confetti bombs.

In a two-step process that begins with challenging pop songwriting and serpentine playing, Einmo ultimately becomes a manic-DJ chopping and slicing on his own material and peppering it with field recordings made while traveling the US and Japan on tour. The result sounds like a joyride of timeless pop songs blaring from your car radio, while an electronic Krautrock band destroys the club you’re passing and hip-hop simultaneously pounds out of the Jeep breathing down your neck at the light.

“I don’t shy away from mixing different elements together,” says Einmo, with one foot on a fog machine, and the other tangled up in a trademark red and black boa, while crowd sweat drips off his sequencer. “I approach the music as a DJ, except instead of sampling other artists’ vinyl, I’m sampling my own playing and then peppering it with lots of fun guests in the studio. I think some people are sort of baffled by an album that has several different vocalists and mixes electronic, indie rock and hip hop into one record. But that’s the point. It’s intended to sound like an underground radio playlist for Saturday night’s drive to the party.”

It’s a ride that started in 2006. Marrying a love of progressive electronic production and instrumental wizardry with a spot-on knack for writing great pop hooks, Head Like A Kite debuted that year with the Pattern 25 release, Random Portraits of the Home Movie, a universally praised album built around samples from family Super-8 home movies from the 70s. The success

of the album led to tours of the US and Japan (with projector in tow) and an appearance on MTV2’s “On The Rise” and NPR’s Weekend America, and songs placed on CNN, Fuel TV, VH1, MTV2, and more. Head Like A Kite continued the climb with a move to LA-based electronic label Mush for the summer 2008 release, There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere, which debuted in the CMJ Top 50, and charted #1 at influential stations such as KEXP. Building on HLAK’s found sound meets electronic rock framework with unquestionable expertise, the new album Dreams Suspend Night delivers an enthusiastic party popper.

“If I had only one word to describe the album, I’d choose “festive,” says Einmo. “This record captures my enthusiasm for recording live instruments and then deconstructing the songs into electronic-pop bliss.”

In concert, Head Like A Kite throws the party: Fog machines occlude tossed and torn furry stuffed animals being thrown among the fans, as Einmo and live drummer Trent Moorman stomp and sweat inside art theater and a floor-bending dance party. At venues and festivals, HLAK ties epic pop-soul overflow into sunny glitchy beats, sounding like a soulful, gut-punching underground rock band remixed by “Entroducing”-era DJ Shadow hopped up on Red Bull and DFA records.

Dreams Suspend Night was mastered by Dave Cooley (Danger Mouse, Silversun Pickups, Polyphonic Spree, Madlib, Prefuse 73) in Los Angeles, and recorded in Seattle at Electrokitty Studios.
